Description

This magnitude 5.8 open cluster is located 2500 light years away in the constellation of Hydra at a declination of -6 degrees.  It spans 40 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a width of 30 light years.  It is comprised of about 80 stars.

This is one of the least impressive of the Messier open clusters, but at least it has a number of orange giants.  The cluster is more triangular than circular in shape.
