Description

NGC 300 in Sculptor. Taken on the 15th September 2021 in LHaRGB.
This galaxy is placed in Category 11 of Arp and Madore's  "Catalogue of Southern Peculiar galaxies" . According to Arp & Madore "Occasionally spiral galaxies are encountered which have three well-defined arms instead of the usual two. The kind of perturbation which would create such arms is difficult to hypothesize so this Category has been assembled as a challenge to theories of spiral structure."  I am not sure if spiral structure theories have advanced much beyond this statement but I thought it was interesting nonetheless.
