Description

Galaxy M 108, pictured left, is a spiral galaxy in the Ursa Major constellation, 34 million light-years away. Its diameter is about 100,000 light years.
The Owl Nebula M97 at right is a planetary nebula whose distance could not be accurately determined. The data vary between 400 and 12,000 light years.
The nebula was formed by the ejection of the central star's shell. This shell, 2 light-years across, is still expanding at a rate of 40km per second.
