* Back in the saddle! A series of mono images from 2022 *

Here is another quick integration with the big telescope. The goal of the night was to tackle some technical challenges with the Off-Axis guider. My image of NGC891 had a nasty shadow from the OAG prism stalk, it had to be moved further out of the light beam. Once done, the guide camera had to be re-focused. Out of focus stars show strong coma but the field was very usable once properly focused.




I was able to collect 2.5 hours of luminance data with excellent guiding before clouds rolled in. The result was heavily cropped to eliminate tilted areas of the sensor. I think sharpness is about as good as I can get with the sampling on my system. E.g. the double star on the right edge (~2" separation) is almost split after deconvolution. 

My processing was focused on getting optimal sharpness and resolution out of this dataset. All data was 2X drizzle stacked to improve resolution and visibility of fine detail. The animation shows the effect of deconvolution and wavelet-sharpening. Native FWHM was 2.5 arcseconds, and improved to 2.1 arcseconds after deconvolution. Stars were first de-blurred with Richardson-Lucy deconvolution, star elongation was corrected with motion blur deconvolution. Contrast of the dark dust lanes in the galaxy core was enhanced with with PixInsight’s MultiscaleLinearTransform (wavelet sharpening) using a mask for the galaxy only.
