Description

NGC 6888, also known as the Crescent Nebula, is a striking and intricate emission nebula situated in the constellation Cygnus, approximately 4,700 light-years away from Earth. The Crescent Nebula derives its name from its crescent-like appearance, which is primarily attributed to the presence of a massive, hot, and young Wolf-Rayet star at its core. This central star, known as WR 136, is a rare and luminous type of massive star that has already shed much of its outer layers through intense stellar winds and is currently in a late evolutionary stage. These powerful stellar winds, with velocities on the order of thousands of kilometers per second, interact with the surrounding interstellar medium, creating the visually stunning shell-like structure characteristic of NGC 6888.

While I imaged this target before, this version was my first attempt using the L-eXtreme filter on my ASI071MC OSC camera. This summer's conditions were much worse than normal with unstable air and presence of wildfire smoke, yet the RCAstro processes used were of great help cleaning up the data. Subframes taken on July 10, 11, 12 and 16, 2023.
