Description

The Heart Nebula is an emission nebula powered by an open cluster of stars, Melotte 15, in the center of the nebula. The cluster contains a number of very bright stars, having masses nearly 50x that of the Sun and a larger number of much smaller, dim stars [1].

The Heart Nebula is about 7500 light years from Earth, in the constellation Cassiopeia. The Fish Head Nebula is at the point of the "Heart", to the upper right of the image.

The image is a two panel mosaic taken in mid-November. I found processing it difficult. Normally I would use an HSO but I couldn't get a balance that I liked and that showed the detail of the nebula. I had another go last week and simply played with palettes to see what would happen. In the end I went with this one, which shows the detail pretty well, I think.
