Description

M94 is a barred (?) spiral galaxy in Canes Venatici. It is about 16 millons lys away. A quite intriguing object. Not only the shape is odd with this double ring structure. There also more puzzling aspects for the scientists who investigated about it related to the fact that dark matter seems to be almost absent, a quite unusual result. Galaxy formation models are put under pressure by this galaxy.
I was quite surprised how big it comes out in a 4inch refractor with 580 mm focal length. You can even perceive tiny background in the outer ring structure, which is amazing. Processing was done in a bit different way than my former galaxy pictures that I published recently. In order to preserve the background I did not split the L layer in starless and stars, but realized different mask instead with StarXT. Again basically because StarXT failed on tiny galaxies. Deconvolution was applied softly at 25% with 0.08 star sharpness to avoid artefacts. Colours were realized by photometric calibration method in PI and then a bit boosted for the RGB layer.

By the way, my personal record : I spent 3 (!) nights of data acquisition between Feb. and May on this target, some of them under quite difficult conditions (veils and moon). After a 6 month's raining period from August to Mid February we had plenty of clear skies in the Northern France these last months, unfortunately I have only access to my gear a few nights per month, a bit frustrating. However I much like the outcome and hope that you can like it too.
All the best, Andreas
