Description

This will be my final image with my trusty Meade DSI III pro CCD camera in combination with the Samyang f2 lens, which has served me well for the last few years. I am fortunate to have picked up a new Altair 183 Mono CMOS camera at a very good price at auction. This has 2.4 micron pixels providing a much better ~3.5”/px scale with my Samyang lens, and will compliment my OSC. I will keep the CCD which is well suited to my SCT with 6.45 micron pixels.

M106 is glorious at longer focal lengths, but to be honest this image a disappointment. The framing is aweful, I managed 38 x 300s exposures with a UHC L booster filter, but disappointed with the lack of detail and interest in this wider field. A few other tiny galaxies, and the usual ‘blooming’ artefacts from the old CCD technology.

On the plus, taken in Northumberland at my parents townhouse, where the skies are rated B4 (better than my rural home in Derbyshire), and another opportunity to visit my old Da who is fading in his twilight days, weeks, months… who knows he has an indomitable spirit. I also managed a walk on Hadrian’s wall designed to keep the Scots out in  AD 122; time he slipped back o’er the border.

Title: Hadrian’s wall, Northumberland

Description: An opportunity to enjoy the wide open spaces and history of Northumbria. At 80 miles long the Roman wall links the East to West coasts, taking around 6 years to build in AD 122. It has Milecastles and 14 forts along its length, home to many high ranking Roman officials and legions. Anyway Hadrian reminds me of another great wall/fence builder, however, that was back then, this is now!
