Description

HSO from Telescope Live CMOS Australia

RCW62 is a **nebula** in the southern constellation Crux, also known as the Southern Cross¹. It is part of the **Running Chicken Nebula** complex, which is ionised by the Cru OB1 association of hot stars¹. RCW62 is also called Gum 42 or IC 2944¹.

RCW62 was discovered by **Colin Gum** in 1955, who catalogued it as Gum 42¹. It is a large and bright nebula that spans about 70 light years across and lies at a distance of about 6,500 light years from Earth¹. It contains several young stars and clusters, as well as dark globules of dust and gas that are potential sites of star formation¹².

RCW62 is visible with binoculars or a small telescope, and appears as a diffuse patch of light near the bright star Lambda Centauri¹². It is best seen from the southern hemisphere during autumn and winter months².
