Description

A shot I was able to snap over a Thanksgiving outing near Rodanthe, NC in the Outer Banks before clouds rolled in. The other side of this dune looks down on the beach and is littered by seashells. At first, I was a little disappointed by the high clouds / haze, but it ultimately led to a neat halo effect of the prominent stars of Orion.

This image was created by snapping a non-tracked 120" ISO800 foreground shot of the dune, illuminated from a low angle by my cell phone light, combined with a processed stack of 3x180" (average combine) of tracked sky shots of Orion as it rose above the dune.

Canon 6D, Canon 1.4 50mm Lens @ F.3.5, iOptron Skyguider Pro for tracking. .

Sky shot stacked in DSS using median combine (wanted more subs but clouds had other plans), processed in Startools for gradient removal and stretching, merged in Photoshop, and refined with final noise reduction and saturation adjustments in Lightroom CC.
