Description

This emission nebula is designated IC 1318b It is located in the constellation Cygnus. This is an interesting nebula. When you do an online search for IC 1318, you may get this particular nebula, or you may get its much brighter and more photographed and popular sibling - IC 1318 (no "b"). Both of these nebulae straddle the bright star Sadr in the center of the Cygnus cross - 1318 to the east and 1318b to the west of Sadr "b" has virtually no oxygen emission whatsoever, it's really a very weak component. Hydrogen alpha (Ha) is very strong and - surprisingly sulfur is very strong as well - almost as strong as the Ha. Since Ha and sulfur are both red, their contribution to the color in this nebula yields the strong yellows and golds of the Hubble Palette. Obviously, with very little oxygen component, there is no or very subtle blue anywhere.
