Description

These objects are located in the constellation of Auriga at a declination of +34 degrees. IC 417 (on the right) is about 7000 light years away, while NGC 1931 (on the left) is about 10,000 light years away.  It is interesting that the IC 417 designation is for the HII emission nebula while the NGC 1931 designation is for the open star cluster.

Each object consists of an open star cluster energizing the gas nebula around it, with IC417 containing the star cluster Stock 8 and NGC 1931 containing its namesake cluster.  The space between these two objects appears relatively free of gas and dust.

The thin dust pillar of IC 417 is about 1.5 light years long.

These objects are nicknamed the Spider Nebula (IC 417) and the Fly Nebula (NGC 1931).  Both objects just missed making my Worst DSO Nicknames poster.
