Description

Pleiades, or M45, an open cluster of young stars in the zodiacal constellation Taurus, about 440 light-years from the solar system. It contains a large amount of bright nebulous material and more than 1,000 stars, of which six or seven can be seen by the unaided eye and have figured prominently in the myths and literature of many cultures. In Greek mythology the Seven Sisters.
The cluster was first examined telescopically by Galileo, who found more than 40 members. It was first photographed by Paul and Prosper Henry in 1885.
