M101 Spiral Galaxy - Wide Field View

Description

Taken on May 18, 2012 in the backyard with my C11 & HyperStar III Lens. (NOTE: This image was re-processed with improvements in Photoshop CS5.1 in August 2012).

I took 36 sub-exposures and was able to use (28) of them. Each exposure was (5) minutes in duration. I also took 30 Bias, Flats & 10 Darks for image calibration. Everything was calibrated in Maxim DL and was then brought into Photoshop CS5. I had pretty good guiding with my Stellarvue Raptor Scope with the SX Lodestar ccd camera. This particular Galaxy is located 27 Million Light Years away from Earth. It is considered one of the most "grandest" spiral Galaxies in the sky - a very large Galaxy. There have been (4) Supernovas that have been observed and currently there is one shining in this photo from a Supernova that occured in 2011 (last year).

Equipment used was: Celestron Nexstar 11 SCT with a Mitty Wedge, Hyperstar III, Starlight Xpress SXVR-M25C with an IDAS Filter, Stellarvue Raptor Scope with a SX Lodestar Guiding Camera, Starizona Remote MicroFocus, Icron Powered USB, Maxim DL 5.0, Starry Night Pro, Adobe Photoshop CS5.1, ADM Mounting Hardware, Sony Vaio Laptop (High Res Screen Graphics), and my Backyard under Dark Skies
