Description

This image of the M31 Andromeda Galaxy was taken on 10/21/11 in northern Illinois. I was lucky to capture the Asteroid 372 Palma briefly "streaking" over Andromeda Galaxy. The Galaxy is located over 2.5 million light years from Earth, while 372 Palma resides in the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter. The size of the Asteroid is about 116 miles in diameter while Andromeda Galaxy is estimated to be 220,000 light years in diameter! Included in this view are (2) other Satelitte Galaxies of Andromeda: The round dwarf elliptical Galaxy M32 and below that is the other dwarf elliptical Galaxy M110.

I used (83) images in which each sub was (3) minutes in duration. Total imaging time was from 10:45 pm until 4:15 am in the morning. Maxim DL 5.1 Astronomical Software was used to capture all the photo files. Afterwards, I took (30) Flats and (30) Bias Images along with (10) Darks. All (83) Images were Calibrated and Color Corrected using Maxim DL and then they were Stacked & Aligned. Much time was spent in Photoshop going through several iterations of balancing the proper colors, sharpness and highlights. I also created a short video of the Asteroid moving over Andromeda - that video is in the same folder as this one. Check it out.

Equipment used was: Celestron Nexstar 11 SCT with a Mitty Wedge, Hyperstar III, Starlight Xpress SXVR-M25C with an IDAS Filter, Stellarvue Raptor Scope with a SX Lodestar Guiding Camera, Starizona Remote MicroFocus, Icron Powered USB, Maxim DL 5.0, Starry Night Pro, Adobe Photoshop CS5.1, ADM Mounting Hardware, Sony Vaio Laptop (High Res Screen Graphics), and my Backyard under Dark Skies.
