Description

NGC4490, the Cocoon galaxy in Canes Venatici. I picked this target because there are relatively few pictures of it on the internet.

These galaxies were distorted as they passed through each other and are currently thought to be about 24 000 light years apart. The star forming regions along the face of the NGC4490 are thought to be formed by the collision with NGC4485 and appear to be outside of the galaxy structure. I have just found out that this is also known as ARP 269 from Arp's peculiar galaxies catalog (thank you Sara)

I originally captured 105x 5 minute exposures in the 3 nights I captured this but had to discard a lot because of tracking errors caused by the wind.
