Description

The Cigar Galaxy, Messier 82 (M82), also known as NGC 3034, or M82, is a starburst galaxy approximately 12 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major. It is the second-largest galaxy within the M81 Group, with a diameter of about 40,800 light-years. The galaxy is remarkably five times more luminous than the Milky Way, with its central region being about a hundred times more luminous. The intense starburst activity in M82 is thought to have been triggered by interaction with its neighboring galaxy, M81. This type of activity makes M82 a prototypical example of a starburst galaxy. The starburst core of M82 is a highly energetic and dense environment. Hubble Space Telescope observations have revealed numerous young massive clusters in this region, with an average mass around 200,000 solar masses. Star formation in the galaxy's center occurs at a rate ten times faster than in the entire Milky Way Galaxy. The active starburst region, the galaxy's central starburst, and the star formation in its disk all contribute to M82's designation as a starburst galaxy.

This image marks my inaugural astrophotography attempt in Nerpio and is the first capture using my C11HD telescope. It's a composite of RGB data with an overlay of Ha data.Encountered some challenges with the flats, but it's all part of the learning curve.Clear skies and enjoy,
