Description

The Whale Galaxy or NGC 4631, sometimes also known as the Herring Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy about 25 million light years away from Earth. It can be seen from the side in the direction of Canes Venatici in the northern star sky. The whale galaxy is about the size of the Milky Way and was discovered by William Herschel on March 20, 1787. Below left is the "hockey stick" or NGC 4656 at a distance of 40 million light years.
