Description

M 58 and Surrounding Galaxies (and an asteroid!)

Captured from my neighbor Calvin's front yard last night. It is a compilation of 215 two-minute images.

M 58 (bottom center) is 68 million lightyears away. It was discovered by Charles Messier and at the time (and unbeknownst to him) was the furthest object discovered due date in1779.

NGC 4567 and NGC 4568 are located at the right of the image. They are a pair of merging galaxies 60 million light years away discovered by William Herschel in 1784.

I also managed to capture an asteroid as it transited through the image. I removed it in post processing but included it here for those interested. It appears as a blur because it moved through the scene over the course of the evening. It is 464 Megaira, a 48 mile across "minor planet" in the asteroid belt discovered in 1901.
