Description

This trio of galaxies in Draco includes NGC-5981, NGC-5982, and NGC-5985. It is a very interesting group because of the contrasting morphologies of the three members. The northern galaxy, NGC-5985, is a face-on type SAB spiral galaxy which lies 130 million light years from Earth. It is over 200,000 light years in diameter.  The middle galaxy is NGC-5982, a type E-3 elliptical galaxy. It lies 130 million light years from Earth and is over 100,000 light years in diameter. The southern galaxy is NGC-5981, an edge-on type SB spriral galaxy, also 130 million light years distant. All three galaxies were discovered by Sir William Herschel in 1788.
