Description

This spiral galaxy is located 60 million light years away in the constellation of Cetus at a declination of -8 degrees.  It is a magnitude 11.6 galaxy which spans 2.8 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 50,000 light years.

This is a colorful galaxy, with a yellowish core, blue star clouds and pink HII regions.  The bright, distinct spiral arm pattern is fascinating, although our inclined view angle (about 30 degrees from edge-on) makes it difficult to identify the structure exactly.   It looks to me like 4 main arms, along with a number of fragments.  The brightness of the disk falls off dramatically outside of the arms.
