Description

Galaxies like NGC 4945 that have an unusually bright nuclei were named after Carl Seyfert. It was discovered by James Dunlop in 1826 and is thought to be similar to our Milky Way (although the Milky Way isnt a Seyfert galaxy)Situated in the constellation of Centarus with the bright 5.3 magnitude X1 Centauri (closest) and 5.7 magnitude X2 Centauri stars. NGC 4945 lies approx 11.7 million light years froom us. Further to the left is the peculiar elliptical galaxy NGC 4976 at a more distant but less accurate 41 million light years. Also in the 1.37 x .92 deg FOV is a number of other galaxies in the PGC catalogue.
