Description

Hi astro-friends !

We are both very happy to share with you our first joint project: IC 1396 in pure "LRGB".  Kudos to Nicola for having gathered the lights from his remote obs located in Spain.

The journey to get to the final version was quite a story  !!!!! Neither of us are really "LRGB" guys - but we really enjoyed it and learned quite a lot. Overall, we are "okay" with the final version of this image - even though there are still room for improvement.

Let us know what you think about it.

Stay tuned - more to come.

Warm regards,

N. et A.

Target description:

Hundreds of light-years across and about 3,000 light years from Earth, IC 1396 is an open star cluster in Cepheus associate with an extremely large region of faint nebulosity. The nebulosity sprawls across roughly 3 degrees of the sky. Despite being very difficult to observe with a telescope, it is one of the most imaged astronomical objects by astrophotographers. The Elephant Trunk nebula is a concentration of interstellar gas and dust within IC 1396. It is a dark, very dense globule with a bright, sinuous rim. The entire IC 1396 is ionized by the massive star HD 206267, except for dense globules that can protect themselves from the star’s harsh ultraviolet rays. Usually, photographers use narrowband filters to for such an astronomical object. I, however, have opted for a more natural color by relying only on LRGB filters to have a more delicate and pleasant palette colors.
