Description

M94 is classified as a spiral galaxy and is approximately 16 million light years away from the earth.  The colorful ring around the galaxy's center is called the "starburst ring" and is a region where new stars are being formed at a high rate.  The diffuse outer ring is actually more spiral arms which are visible when viewing the galaxy at mid-IR and UV wavelengths.  M94 is the subject of a great deal of research because it lacks the dark matter that scientific models say is necessary for a galaxy to form.
