Description

First attempt at this oceanic icon, the Whale Galaxy!
In stacking thru ASILive, began with 965 5 sec subs, followed by 160 10 sec subs, and then 425 5 sec subs. (Had to use 1710 subs at 5sec to equal the correct integration time)
Combined these three fits thru DeepSkyStacker and stretched with GIMP. (Revision includes only the 965 5 sec subs for 1 hr 20 minutes)
Then after separating the stars from the galaxy worked on processing just the galaxy.
I did not like the results of the stars from the three fit files combined, so went back and extracted the stars just from the 965 5 sec subs.
Reduced the more bloated stars thru PS and then recombined the stars with the galaxy.
For the two hours of integration, I like the galaxy result, but still would like to work more on the stars.

After all that, it is good to just consider what it is we are viewing, as in all the astro photos uploaded here. Just amazing to consider the depth and breadth of the universe and knowing that there are hundreds of billions of galaxies each with hundreds of billions of stars!! Being able to capture but a handful of these and share is a gift.  Thousands of years ago, a young shepherd boy who no doubt looked up into the night sky and was in wonder, eventually penned these words, "The heavens declare the glory of God."

Title: Whale Galaxy 965 5 sec sub-frames

Description: Re-processed this with only the 965 5 sec sub-frames.
The other two fit files I stacked with the 965 sub-frames seemed to degrade the sharpness overall.
The 965 sub-frames alone provided a much cleaner and sharper image, particularly within the dust-lane and core.
