Description

I observed this object on 18 May 2023 at the Texas Star Party using a 22” Obsession UC Dobsonian: M80 is a bright Globular Cluster with a large halo. It brightens significantly towards the core. Many halo stars were resolved. This is a very nice object to observe. It is 95 LY in diameter. It has many Blue Stragglers which indicates a high stellar collision rate.

Shapley Sawyer Classification: II
Distance: 32,620 LY
Type: Hub Globular
Position w.r.t. core of galaxy: Above the MW and on the far side of the core.
Any stars resolved: Yes
