Description

This is a narrow-band, false-color image of the rather obscure "dark" nebula LDN 847, and includes. Sharpless 2-101, located in the constellation Cygnus in our northern sky. I chose to orient this image with the west at the top simply because I find it more aesthetically pleasing. It is a "false color" image in that it is a composite of the result of exposures through Sulphur-II, Hydrogen-alpha, and Oxygen-III filters in what is known as the "Hubble Palette." Normally, using that palette, H-alpha is depicted as green, but, frankly, the green was overwhelming and not pleasing to my eye, so I converted the green to yellow. The blue coloration comes from clouds of molecular oxygen, excited by nearby stars.Sh2-101 is the blob on the center-right of the image and is a small cluster of new-born stars ionizing the molecular clouds from which they were born, is about 6,000 light-years from earth, and to provide some perspective, is about 60 light-years in diameter.

The telescope used here was a Takahashi FSQ-106EDX4, mounted on a Paramount MX+, using an FLI PL16803 camera. The image is composed of 22, 600-second exposures each through Sulphur-II, Hydrogen-alpha, and Oxygen-III filters, for a total exposure time of 11 hours. The telescope, mount, and camera belong to the Telescope.live facility at Oria, Almeria, Spain from which the data for the image was captured remotely in May, August, and October 2022.
