Description

The main image here is an 8k crop of the wide field, which appears as a revision. Very dim target, but worth the effort. Heckathorn-Fesen-Gull 1 (HFG 1) is a planetary nebula created by the binary star system V664 Cas, which is moving rapidly through the galaxy. As it ploughs through the interstellar medium, a bow shock is forming around the outside of the main structure. It is likely that V664 Cas will someday produce a Type Ia supernova because the binary companion, a sun-like star, of the white dwarf orbits closely at only a few million kilometers in distance with an orbital period of only 14 hours and is accreting mass onto the white dwarf. Once the white dwarf reaches the Chandrasekar limit, it will convert itself into a gigantic carbon bomb. Abell 6, the smaller looking formation, exhibits more of a typical morphology for planetary nebulas.
