Description

Surrounded by variably dark interstellar dust, the Iris Nebula is a bright blue reflection lit up by the blue star SAO 19158. The nebula in located in Cepheus and is also known as Caldwell 4, while the NGC 7023 designation actually refers to the open cluster embedded in the blue nebula and LBN 487 refers to the larger surrounding reflection nebula itself. Not far away is vDb141, the Ghost Nebula.  Between the two DSOs is the bright orange T Cep variable star. Given its relatively large size of 18x18 arcmin and relatively bright (for a reflection nebula) magnitude 6.8, the Iris Nebu is a diverse and beautiful summer target even for shorter focal length telescopes.
