Description

The big picture is dominated by the diffuse nebula NGC 1435, located south of Merope. Its brilliant luminosity and filaments make for a stunning sight. It is known as the Merope Nebula. It has a surface brightness of 4 magnitude and is 359 light years from our Solar System. Its diameter reaches 3 light years. However, it is not the protagonist in this image, but the tiny object with the catalogue number IC 349, discovered in November 1890 by the American astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard, who described it as a comet-like nebula.
