Description

This planetary nebula in northern Eridanus only rises to 31 degrees above the southern horizon for me, so it's difficult to image from my backyard which has a narrow view of the south. Its also in the Portland Oregon glare, but fortunately it has a high surface brightness, making it a pretty easy target if seeing is good. The high surface brightness also makes it difficult to bring out a lot of detail on its surface. I captured some duoband filter data for the nebula and only a couple of IR/UV Cut filter images for star colors. Maybe I could have pulled out more surface texture with more images, but the season was ending and I barely managed to get what I got before seeing got bad and clouds arrived to stay for the winter.

The nebula was measured to be 4,506±363 light years away, based on Gaia data back in 2020. It's 44 by 50 arc seconds across, which makes it 1.1 light years across at this distance.

Each 300 second exposure was a batch of 75 x 4 second exposures live stacked in SharpCap.
