Description

The great globular cluster in Hercules is a spectacular sight in northern skies. Lying at a distance of around 25,000 light years it contains several hundred thousand stars and is about 145 light years in diameter.

A few background galaxies are visible in the image. The brightest, identified when the mouse is moved over the image, is IC 4617, a 16th-magnitude Seyfert galaxy approximately 550 million light years away.

North is to the lower right in this image (PA=133 degrees). The famous three-bladed propeller feature is above centre in this orientation. With some effort, two of the three 'blades' (dark lanes) can be made out in the zoomed views.

Total exposure time 16 hours (4 each with LRGB filters). Exposures with the Lum filter had to be limited to 10 minutes to avoid saturating the core.
