Description

Animals in the sky! This is the Elephant Trunk nebula (IC 1396) in the constellation Cepheus which I imaged over the past two nights. This is a total of fifty-nine 5 minute images with my Redcat 51 and QHY268 camera. This huge collection of interstellar gas is about 2400 light years away. The entire nebula is ionized by bright young stars in the center with the outer rim being further fueled by the giant star near the “top” of this image. That star is actually thought to be two stars that orbit each other every 3.7 days! All this activity leads to compression of the gasses in the “Elephant trunk” (see second cropped image) and stars are actively being formed in this star creation pillar. Enjoy!
