Description

Gum 85 is the brightest region within SH2-54, which itself is part of the large HII complex that also forms the Eagle and Omega nebula. SH2-54 is the are where star formation started first in this molecular complex. The probable cause is that it started to interact with an old "super bubble" - a cavity filled with hot gas atoms caused by supernovas. Star formation began about 4 million years ago.

This is about as much south as I can reasonably reach into the Summer Milky Way. The target only rises to 28°. I've tried myself on a bit of tone-mapping here, this is only H-alpha + RGB stars. I have more h-alpha data in this region from the Epsilon, but adding it to this image brought no gain, to my surprise. It only made the star shapes a bit worse. I have added it as Revision B to also show the surroundings of Gum 85.
