Description

Here are two different nights of 12P/Pons-Brooks, March 11th and 12th - shot from just over the horizon from my campsite in the Outer Banks of NC. I had about an hour each night in a pretty strong sustained wind of 15-20 knots.

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks is a periodic comet in our solar system. It's part of the Jupiter family of comets, meaning its orbit is influenced by Jupiter's gravitational pull. This comet was independently discovered by astronomers Jean Louis Pons and William Robert Brooks. Pons first observed it on July 12, 1812, while Brooks observed it on July 7, 1883. It was later determined that both sightings were of the same comet, which resulted in the combined name Pons-Brooks.Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks has an orbital period of about 70.4 years. Its orbit takes it from beyond the orbit of Neptune to just inside the orbit of Earth. When it swings close to the Sun, it becomes visible from Earth, typically displaying a coma (a fuzzy cloud of gas and dust) and sometimes a tail, both illuminated by the Sun's light.
