Description

Like anything in Orion, this one was really challenging to get due to the very short window of visibility in the sky from my back yard. This was shot over the course of a month and at the start I was able to get nearly 3 hours a night between trees, however near the end I could only capture about 30 minutes at a time due to the loss of evening light. It became a desperate struggle to finish this off before time ran out and I ran into issues with my focuser getting jammed, losing 2 good night, and then I ended up having to throw out all of the O (5 nights!) as something really weird was happening with a reflection and strange circular patterns from the flats. I guess I've got a new problem to solve

This was also a mix of 30s and 60s exposures as I was trying different things and had to redo integration as I didn't realize they didn't just combine in WBPP. I'm still not sure if I'd rather do 60s or 30s exposures as I shouldn't need more than 30s to minimize noise, while maximizing disturbance proofing, however the time it takes for settling between each dither really eats up actual sky capture time.

So yeah, this is really only H, S, R, G, B, but after looking at the O master, I don't think I was really missing that much and I'm happy with the result. You can see a weird horizontal line on the right side that almost looks like maybe it's a far reaching refraction line and the top right corner is where the collimation is really messed, but unless you look for it in the non-interesting areas I still thin it's rather ok.

I was actually pretty surprised by all the extra cloudy and wispy details both above and below the main bright line of nebulosity, like I've never seen it in most people's pics. I also didn't end up getting that wide range of colours I see in most other people's shots and I guess that must be coming from OSC or LRGB sources, but whatever! I like the colour palette here and it's something a bit different, which is maybe what I'm better at :p

I didn't realize this is under 4 hours without the O, wow!
