Description

The Whirlpool Galaxy was discovered by Charles Messier is 1773. It is approximately 31 million light-years from Earth and located in the constellation Canes Venatici. It's face-on view and relative closeness to Earth allow astronomers to study a classic spiral galaxy’s structure and star-forming processes. The Whirlpool Galaxy is viewable with small telescopes during the springtime.
