Description

The "little sombrero" galaxy does resemble it's more famous cousin M104, even if it doesn't give up quite as much detail.  Both galaxies have big bulges, thin disks, and edge-on dust lanes.  According to a NASA press release of the same photo, NGC 7814 would appear about the same size as M104 except for the fact that it's a bit further away  at 40 million light-years (vs 29 million light-years for M104).    NGC 7814 is an estimated 60K light-years in diameter, a bit on the small side.  In the image, many background galaxies are visible at much greater distances, the largest of which is IC 5381.
