Description

This faint but interesting object is in Cassiopeia.  It was mis-identified by Stewart Sharpless in 1959 as a small, loose cloud of hydrogen, SH2-200.  In the mid 1980s Hartl, Dengel, and Weinberger put it on their list of possible planetary nebulae, as HDW-2.  But it was not until 2017 that it was officially confirmed to be a planetary nebula when the nebula's central, non-fusing, carbon-oxygen white dwarf star was identified.  This star is responsible not only for the gasses in the Bear Claw, but also for ionizing the halo of nearby hydrogen (note the red glow surrounding the central feature).

Another more famous nebula in Scorpius is also known as the Bear Claw, or Cat's Paw - NGC 6334.
