Description

This is a small but colorful and interesting object within the Perseus molecular cloud.  It is one of the most studied star-forming complexes, besides M42.  It hosts about 150 hot new stars less than 1 million years old, 5 Herbig-Haro stars, and a number of brown dwarfs.  It is about 1000 light years away and was not discovered until 1855.  The embedded dark nebulae are designated Barnard 1 and 2.
