Description

Dreyer's Nebula (aka IC 2169, IC 447) was discovered by E.E. Barnard (twice) in 1894 and 1895. He reported the discovery to John Louis Emil Dreyer, the compiler of the NGC and IC catalogues, who listed the object twice in the latter catalogue. No one seems to know why the nebula is named after him!

Two other small reflection nebulae are prominently on display in this image. On the left side of the image is IC 2167 (aka IC 446). At the bottom of the image is NGC 2245 (only one designation for this one). All three of these nebulae, as well as the numerous areas of dark nebulosity seen in the image, belong to a large molecular cloud complex located about 2,500 light years from Earth.
