Description

Stock 1 is Trumpler Type III 2 m open cluster nestled in the dense Milky Way of Vulpecula and shining at a collective magnitude of 7. It is comprised of approximately 40 stars spanning nearly a degree of arc. The cluster is divided into two groups, a larger western section of about thirty stars and a smaller eastern section of ten stars. The brightest stars lie along the south and southeast margins of the cluster.

The eastern section of Stock 2 contains the attractive double star Struve 2548, a pair of 9th and 10th magnitude stars separated by only 9" of arc along a ESE-WNW direction. Barely resolved on this image, the pair is the upper right-hand corner of the parallelogram of stars, and is situated opposite the only yellowish star in the group.

Dark lanes of dust are prominent against the background of fainter stars in this portion of the Milky Way.
