Description

With Mars making its closest approach in two weeks' time I've decided to have a go at some of the unprocessed data from 2020 apparition.

20 October brought by far the best conditions from my location, I ended up recording the planet for nearly 5 hours with seeing improving as the night went on. Here are four aspects of the Red Planet taken about a week after 2020 Opposition. The disk was at impressive 22 arc seconds with elevation favouring southern hemisphere observers.

Each image is a composite of 10 individual 4 minute stacks treated in WinJUPOS. Syrtis Major, Hellas Basin and Sinus Sabaeus are the key albedo features on display as Mars rotated. South Polar Cap shows Mountains of Mitchel extension and there are numerous dawn clouds over the western limb, these tend to dissipate as the morning progresses.
