Looking at the current weather forecast, this might of have been the last night astrophotography this year. I was late getting setup and directed the plan to image the Angel Nebula and M78 for the half the night each. Unfortunately, I had starlink come through the top portion of the Angel Nebula.

Despite the set back, M78 turned out great for only 3.5 hours of integration. This was my first new image I applied the Blur exterminator. I found using the calculated PSF not automatic provided a better results in general and attempted to limit sharpening to the upper 30s. In my trial and error, I found the best results completing it after DBE, but prior to SPCC.

I find M78 and the surrounding area to be gorgeous. The combination of reflection, dark, and shadowing emission nebula of Bernard's Loop provide so many things to catch the eye. The last 2 years, I for one reason or another had not captured it, but it was on the top of the Orion heap.

M78 is located 1350 light years form Earth in the constellation of Orion. It's composed of 3 bright reflection nebula NGC 2071, 2067, 2064 illuminated by two brilliant B type stars.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
