Description

Having successfully completed my move to Arizona and now enjoying an almost horizon-to-horizon sky, I decided to treat myself to a super wide-field telescope. My 72ED offered a pretty wide field, but it was still a little confining for some objects. I happened to notice that a vendor had the latest version of the RedCat 51 in stock and, having spotted a positive review in a recent issue of Sky & Telescope, I purchased it. Last night, I had the chance to use the RedCat for the first time.

After the usual difficulties of switching the camera to a new scope and determining the correct backspace with the RedCat, I managed to get an hour of Ha and 30-minutes each of R, G and B before dawn lit up the sky. Not much, but enough to test the RedCat in combination with the ASI1600mm Pro. (I have ordered the ASI2600mm, but have no idea when I'll actually receive it).

The image comprises:

Ha: 12 x 300s

R: 10 x 180s

G: 10 x 180s

B: 10 x 180s

Total exposure time was 2.5 hours. The image was processed in Pixinsight and tweaked in Photoshop.

I am really quite pleased with the RedCat so far (well, just this one image so far, anyway). It's a short total exposure, just meant to test the new scope out, but I'm happy enough to post it. Curiously, I only calibrated the subs with darks, no flats or dark flats (didn't have time to take those yet). I'm already listing the other targets I want to capture with the RedCat.
