Description

NGC 4244, commonly known as the Silver Needle Galaxy, is an example of a nearly edge-on spiral galaxy located approximately 10 million light-years away from Earth in the constellation Canes Venatici. Morphologically, NGC 4244 belongs to the category of "anemic spirals" due to its low gas and dust content, which results in a relatively low star formation rate. It features a thin, elongated disk that appears needle-like when observed from our vantage point, hence its popular name. It spans a significant angular extent, stretching across approximately 20,000 light-years in diameter.
