Description

This is a composite of two night's work with a Pentax DLSR and 50mm macro lens. The Rho region has the greatest variety of bright objects in a single field of any part of the northern hemisphere's sky. Reflection nebulae, the Antares emission nebula, clusters, you name it, this has got it.

I traveled north a few hundred miles to find good dark-sky conditions with an unobstructed horizon. From 45° North, though, Rho is pretty low on the horizon and so I had to deal with amazing bright green airglow. I worked on this image much more heavily in Photoshop than is my wont, healing a rift where the two nights' images joined, correcting stubborn patches of green glow, getting rid of walking noise, etc.

The first night I worked with the camera mounted my CEM70 GEM, with autoguiding. The second night, I had the camera on a tripod, and used the O-GPS1 AstroTracer feature to compensate for sidereal motion.
