Description

Known as the Cocoon galaxy, NGC 4490, has a scattered and warped appearance as evidence of an intense interaction with another galaxy (NGC 4485) which actually happened about 25 million years ago. The immense forces caused many new stars to form (blue) and which their powerful radiation made gases glow (pink). NGC 4485 is just off the field, upper right but my imaging system couldn't get both galaxies in the field. Captured with a Boller & Chivens 16 inch, f/18 telescope. About 8 hours of LRGB data.
