Description

The Turtle Nebula is a planetary nebula in the constellation of Hercules, and lies at a distance of 6,500 light years. The core area is fairly bright - I tried various exposure times in Ha and OIII right down to 30 seconds without much improvement, and decided upon the exposure times here to try to capture the outer shell. This does however hide the central star of magnitude 12.7.

I estimate the pinky shell at the centre is only about 16 arcseconds across. I went for maximum detail with unsharp mask to try to bring out some of the different features in the nebula and core, and presented a large image by outputting from Photoshop at 200% size.

Description: The inevitable Hubble comparison. I think mine looks more like a turtle... what were they thinking ; ) ?

This HST image is of the central region only, not the extended shell. The red regions roughly correspond to the pinkish blobs in my version as do the turtle's 'feet'.
