Description

Veil Nebula supernova remnant.Western Veil NGC 6960 (aka Witch’s broom)
Eastern Veil NGC 6992
Bat Nebula NGC 6995 (part of East Veil)
Pickerings Triangle (near NGC 6979)

The Veil Nebula complex is located in the constellation of the swan: Cygnus, at a distance of about 1,500 light years. The entire nebula is 110 light-years across, covering six full moons on the sky as seen from Earth.

This is an emission nebula containing wisps of gas and expanding remains of a massive star (20 times larger than our sun) that exploded around 8,000 years ago. The central region of low density gas was blown into space by the dying star prior to its self detonation. The blast wave from the explosion is pushing into a perimeter of cool and dense interstellar gas. Light is emitted from mostly the hydrogen and oxygen atoms giving the red and blue colors respectively.
